"AWC at Lesley College,"

a report by Mary Chaves (a.k.a. Emma Zevik) as published in the IAWM Journal, February 1993, pp. 11.

A project of American Women Composers of Massachusetts, Women of Note is a series of AWC meetings open to the public. As incoming President of AWC/Massachusetts, I hoped to build on the organization's previous events and activities. This year, one of the goals for the organization was increasing our audience. AWC has a fine record of producing concerts and an annual Marathon of women's music. However, like many other new music organizations, we struggle to attract larger audiences.

I worked with the administration of Lesley College in Cambridge to establish a residency for the AWC at the college. This provided the group with a home base and an affiliation. We now open our monthly meetings to the Lesley College community and the public-at-large, inviting people to meet us and our works in an informal setting. Women-Of-Note is a series of AWC meetings open to the public, held on the third Wednesday of the month, with free admission. Each month Women-of-Note presents a different member to discuss her work as the featured composer.

The response from the college and from the public has been excellent. We look forward to expanding our programs.
